On the morning of January 12th, 2018, the second lecture of the Taizhou Institute of Chinese Studies was held in the conference room on the fifth floor of the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University. The guest speaker was the vice chairman of the Association for Cross-Strait Relations and the director of the Academic Committee of the Collaborative Innovation Center for Peaceful Development of Cross-Strait Relations. Director of Taiwan Research Center, Xiamen University, Sun Yafu, professor of Xiamen University. The theme is: Twenty years of cross-strait relations (1987-2017) development history, experience and inspiration. Prof. Chen Xiaochong, Director of the Institute of History of the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University, presided over the meeting. Professor Liu Guoshen, Executive Director of the Institute for the Creation of Cross-Straits Co-operation Center, and some teachers and students from the College attended the lecture.

At the beginning of the forum, Prof. Sun Yafu first introduced the reasons why he selected the theme of “Twenty Years of Cross-Strait Relations (1987-2017) Development History, Experience, and Enlightenment”. He hoped that through this speech, we can all understand that during the past 30 years, the difficulties encountered by the mainland in working with Taiwan and promoting the development of cross-strait relations have brought about inspiration for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations in the future. . As to why 1987-2017 was chosen, Professor Sun Yafu started from the overall perspective. He pointed out that although the peaceful reunification policy was proposed in 1979, there was no real exchange between the two sides until 1987. He believes that in the 30 years from 1987 to 2017, the performance of cross-strait relations has been relatively complete. As more exchanges have been made, many problems have also been exposed. Therefore, “we must see progress and see problems before we can face Taiwan in the future. There is better progress in work. Director Sun Yafu spoke from eight aspects. Focusing on the various problems and phenomena that existed in the cross-strait relations during the three decades from 1987 to 2017, Director Sun combined his own experiences and summarized the laws to allow us to better understand the development of cross-strait relations.

Prof. Sun Yafu cut in from the trend of cross-strait relations and pointed out that in the past 30 years, the cross-strait relations have not been smooth, but they have shown ups and downs. When the contradiction is sharp, it tends to be tense, and when certain conditions appear, it will ease again. However, on the whole, cross-strait relations have not deviated from the general direction. Afterwards, Director Sun Yafu introduced the six major achievements China has achieved in cross-strait relations in the past 30 years: first, it has thwarted the separatist conspiracy of the Taiwan independence elements; second, the two sides of the strait have accumulated important achievements; the third is the two sides. The fourth is the continuous economic, cultural, and social exchanges and cooperation between the two sides of the strait to make the cross-strait relations closer. The fifth is the Hu Lian Hui in 2005 and the “Ji Ma Hui” on November 7, 2015. A historic breakthrough has been made to achieve cross-strait leaders’ meetings. The sixth is that the international community recognizes that the “one China” situation is stable.

Prof. Sun Yafu summarized the change process of the DPP’s “Taiwan independence” position and discourse. He pointed out that along with this process of change, the meaning of “Taiwan’s independence” has also undergone corresponding changes. In total, it has experienced “independent independence” and “Taiwan is the Republic of China”. The three stages of the Republic of China in Taiwan and To be a normal country. Director Sun Yafu also pointed out that the current DPP’s policy is mainly to “maintain the status quo” without changing the “Taiwan independence” position.

Prof. Sun Yafu made a deep interpretation of the United States factors that affect cross-strait relations. He pointed out that the understanding of the United States should pay attention to its two sides: on the one hand, the U.S. government has made a commitment to adhere to the one China policy; if there is no one China policy, there will be no Sino-U.S. relations, and the U.S. does not think that Taiwan is a country but only one. On the other hand, the United States will also provide Taiwan with security protection. On the basis of understanding this two-faced nature, he believes that the current US-Taiwan relationship is characterized by the fact that, given the widening gap in cross-strait strength, the United States will strengthen its support for Taiwan, and we must be highly vigilant.

On the issue of the basic situation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, Professor Sun Yafu pointed out that the situation in the Taiwan Strait mainly includes the following three aspects: the situation in Taiwan, the situation in cross-strait relations, and the external environment. The interaction between the mainland, Taiwan and the United States constitutes the basic pattern of the situation in the Taiwan Strait. Now, the comparison of power between the mainland, Taiwan, and the United States is the first in the United States, second in the mainland, and third in Taiwan. The mainland is getting closer to the United States and shortening the distance with the United States. This change in power balance will cause Changes in the basic situation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait.

Professor Sun Yafu pointed out in his summary: Under cross-strait relations and the new situation with Taiwan, we have already made tremendous achievements in promoting cross-Strait relations. However, we still have a long way to go in pushing for peaceful reunification.
